But before we can move up and down the landscape, we need to know which way is up: what good is, and what is good.</p><p>Thomas Paine built his theory of government by starting with a few people alone in the wilderness. This series does the same, building a theory of morality from the simplest possible point: a rock alone in the universe.</p><p>I claim that without someone to experience the world, nothing is better or worse. This belief decides why a dog&#8217;s pain matters and a thermostat&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t, and whether an AI could ever be wronged.</p></div><h1>In the Beginning </h1><blockquote><p>In the beginning the Universe was created. of immense order, structure, and beauty. If we were given the choice between a universe of an asteroid and one of a floating statue, could we say one was better than the other?</p><p>We humans value order. We value beauty. We value the things that <em>David</em> represents. But in this universe, we do not exist. This universe has only <em>David</em>. And <em>David</em>, like most marble, feels nothing at all. Furthermore, despite it being beautiful (to me), there is no being to witness this beauty. There is no experience by anyone or anything that is made better or worse by having <em>David&#8217;s</em> universe versus that of the simple asteroid.</p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p><strong>Note 2: </strong>The philosopher G.E. Moore ran this exact test in his 1903 book <em><a href="https://amzn.to/3VraZIi">Principia Ethica</a></em>, with whole worlds instead of a rock and a statue, and he came out the other way. He imagined one world of exceeding beauty and another that was a &#8220;heap of filth,&#8221; neither ever seen by any human being, and concluded that the beautiful one was better, that beauty has intrinsic value even with no viewer.</p><p>But I think he quietly imagined himself standing in it, judging. As I see it, some beings could see the floating asteroid as beautiful simplicity and the carved <em>David</em> as a horrible, forced destruction of the purity of rock.</p><p>&#8220;Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,&#8221; as they say. And without a beholder, there is no beauty.</p></div><p>If we accept that there is no moral difference between the just-<em>David</em> universe and the just-asteroid universe, it follows that there would be no moral implication of <em>David</em> undergoing a gravitational collapse into that simple rock. Physical change that does not touch any subjective experience simply does not matter, morally speaking.</p><p>We can take this further. Let us now take our asteroid and grow it to the size of a planet. And put water on this planet, and add lava, and dirt, and call this planet &#8220;Earth.&#8221;</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" were instead a ball of floating water in the void, the scenario would hardly change. Other earthen materials complicate the structure of the planet but not of subjective experience.</p><p>But then imagine bacteria develop, plants grow. Life spawns. Does this change the computation?</p><p>This is a tougher question than it seems. Compare three worlds:</p><ol><li><p>a world akin to the pure, raw, floating asteroid,</p></li><li><p>a world that looks much like Earth, but barren: water, dirt, and rock, and</p></li><li><p>a world like Earth which is populated with trees and plants and algae.</p></li></ol><p>It feels hard to deem them equal. One is a world full of life, and the others are devoid of it. The statue of <em>David</em> can be manipulated physically, spun, moved, or broken. But plants can grow, they can wither, they can reproduce, and they can die.</p><p>Since attributing conscious experience to plants is difficult, I will delay tackling it for now as it doesn&#8217;t matter to the point I&#8217;m making. First, let&#8217;s consider the world of dandelions, moss, and bacteria under the assumption that they have no consciousness at all. This is an assumption you may not agree with, but one I&#8217;ll make to illustrate a point rather than to prove a point. If we reverse this assumption later, it will not change the argument.</p><p>If this is the case, this green planet would not be so different from the universe of <em>David</em>. We humans enjoy the beauty of nature. We appreciate plants. We value life. But again, we do not exist. </p><p>In this world, when a plant dies, it is a loss to no one. When a tree sprouts, it is likewise unexciting. Whole processes of nature could play out: winds carrying seeds that take root, flora germinating, and many organisms growing to span major tracts of land. Yet, those beings are unconscious (by our assumption), and there is nobody to appreciate such things, and the things themselves are unaware of their own existence. There is no such thing as awareness. There is no subjectivity. There is no conscious experience.</p><h1>Nobody Home on Zombie Earth</h1><p>As a child, I occasionally imagined that I might be the only conscious person, and that everyone around me was an automaton merely mimicking human behavior. If you&#8217;ve ever thought this, or if you&#8217;ve ever watched the TV show <em>Westworld</em>, then you&#8217;ve already pictured what philosophers call a &#8220;philosophical zombie.&#8221; The lights are on but nobody is home.</p><p>Now imagine that our world of green develops animals. Horses are galloping. Beavers are dam-building. Bears are salmon-eating. Finally, humans come along and build cities. But every one of these beings is a zombie. A human zombie may behave exactly like you. It flinches, laughs, argues, and writes essays. But it has no inner experience at all. All life in the universe is the same as it is right now but with one difference: nothing is conscious.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" profusely but experience no sorrow. Animate beings with no subjectivity, no emotion, no feeling at all. </p><p>This hypothetical world too is not so different from the world of Michelangelo&#8217;s <em>David</em>, the world of flora, or the floating asteroid. Zombie Earth is just another arrangement of physical material: more complex, but no more important.</p><p>If Zombie Earth were destroyed, nothing that matters would be lost, for the same reason nothing would be lost if <em>David</em> collapsed. There is no one for whom one world is better than the other.</p><p>That conclusion may feel wrong. Surely destroying a whole living planet is bad? In our world it usually would be, because someone would suffer. But while Zombie Earth is full of objectively existing beings, there is no <em>there</em> there: Zombie Earth has no inner life whatsoever. What makes destroying this planet feel wrong, I&#8217;d suggest, is the feeling that &#8220;someone&#8221; is being impacted or your values for life are being violated. But in this world, there is no &#8220;someone,&#8221; and you and your values do not exist either.</p><p>A planet of people who feel nothing is as morally inert as a single rock floating in the void.</p><h1>Instrumental Value</h1><p>The claim so far is that the universe has no moral value if it contains no conscious experience. But that does not mean there is no sense of value at all. </p><p>We could recognize a basic sort of objective value, which we can call <em>instrumental value</em>. Physical objects can have value in service of some end. </p><p>For example, it is good for the process of solar fusion to have hydrogen, and it would be bad for the process to not have it. A universe with our sun is no better or worse than one without it, unless someone lives in the warmth of its rays. Winning a game is worth no more than losing, unless someone is playing. <em>That something is good for an end says nothing about whether the end is good in itself.</em></p><p>Instrumental value borrows its moral value from its ends. Every chain of instrumental &#8220;good for something&#8221; has to end in some conscious being&#8217;s experience to carry moral weight. It needs an end that is valuable for its own sake. We can call that <em>intrinsic value</em>. No universe we&#8217;ve explored so far has had any intrinsic value.</p><p>A physically thriving universe that is empty of experience is morally inert.</p><h1>First Spark</h1><p>Now imagine we leave every atom of Zombie Earth in place, but flip one switch, and suddenly let one creature feel. Someone is home for the first time.</p><p>At once, the universe changes in a way more important than mere physical changes. If a rock falls beside us, it can scare us. Sunlight warms us. Hunger gnaws at us. For the first time, things can go better or worse, because they can go better or worse <em>for</em> someone. With the first spark of feeling, the universe suddenly has moral direction. It starts to create positively (upward) and negatively (downward) sloped hills that define a moral landscape.</p><p>We can call this value that exists in a subject&#8217;s experience <em>subjective value.</em></p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p>By &#8220;subjective&#8221; I mean that value lives in experience, not that it is relative to what anyone says. Whether value is just a matter of opinion is a real worry (and is the subject of the next essay).</p></div><p>Put us in front of <em>David</em>. Now the statue matters. It can move us, calm us, or awe us. But the subjective value lives not in the marble, which is the same marble it was in the empty universe. Hydrogen is good for the sun, the sun is good for establishing life, life is good for us, and how our lives go is good or bad in itself. That last link is to the intrinsic value connected to our subjective experience.</p><p>This does not yet say which experiences are good. Pleasure is the obvious candidate, and I&#8217;ll argue later that it is not the whole story. Nor does it say whose experience counts, or how much. It says only where intrinsic value lives: in subjective experience.</p><h1>Which Way Up?</h1><p>If value lives only in experience, then a rule, a tradition, an economy, or an ecosystem matters only through what it does to beings who can feel. Why do we care about a dog&#8217;s pain and not a thermostat&#8217;s? Could an AI agent ever be wronged? On this view, those questions turn entirely on whether anyone is there to experience anything.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg" width="1456" height="971" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:971,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:106645,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://writing.jasperburns.com/i/217626879?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OzK-!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7e95cf11-c248-43bf-bf21-fb54b03ef534_1456x971.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" class="icon-noB79L"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2 icon-noB79L"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>So, which way is up on the moral landscape? slowly writing for the better part of a decade. It is the result of a lifetime of feeling not wholly certain how to act in the world.</p><p>Humans (read: me) want to make sense of a complex and confusing world with definitions, rules, and order. Yet collapsing reality into frameworks is naturally inaccurate. No guide to living&#8212;be it a sentence, a paragraph, or even a book&#8212;can be wholly instructive across the diversity of life&#8217;s experiences. Still, we&#8217;ve built religions, political traditions, and cultures that help us navigate the hills and valleys of life. Whatever their flaws, they offer a moral map.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://allaspect.blog/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! The path of my life has never attached me too strongly to any specific ideology.</p><p>We lacked religion. My mom was Christian and my father Jewish. But my parents had tough childhoods; the limited role religion played in their youth disappeared completely as they escaped into adulthood. They didn&#8217;t instill it in me, and had they tried, our split religious identity might still have weakened these dogmas. As a child, religion mostly meant gathering and gifts on high holidays.</p><p>My parents also spent my childhood in opposite political parties, and politics wasn&#8217;t even that important back then. I was so politically na&#239;ve that in college, when I secured a White House internship in the Obama administration, it shocked me to never meet a Republican working there. I thought a sane, functioning government would obviously include both parties to represent the values of all power brokers and their constituents. I may have been right that this is what a sane government needs, but looking back, that innocent idealism seems silly.</p><p>And while deeply patriotic, I find American cultural heritage doesn&#8217;t provide much moral dogma. American culture has several key themes, such as freedom and individualism. But it is also very diverse and often disjointed. While our laws are well-defined, cultural values and ethical norms are less so.</p><p>Without sufficient grounding in religion, politics, or culture, I felt unmoored from a structured approach to ethics. I imagined writing my own Bible, my own Constitution, my own culture.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://amzn.to/3V4WOZk">Common Sense</a></em><a class="footnote-anchor" data-component-name="FootnoteAnchorToDOM" id="footnote-anchor-1" href="#footnote-1" target="_self">1</a> in college. In it, he argues against monarchy and for democracy. But the structure of his argument impacted me more than its mere substance. Instead of saying &#8220;monarchy is bad for XYZ reasons,&#8221; he started from first principles. He asked us to imagine a single man alone in the woods. What would government look like then? What about with 10 men, then 100, then 1,000? How would we form a government if we were to build it from scratch? At small scales, direct democracy makes sense as communities can manage it. But as society grows, a democratic republic would naturally form.</p><p>Regardless of how convincing one finds Paine&#8217;s conclusions, the idea of starting from scratch, free from the countless biases of the modern Western world, appealed to me as a way to build a moral, epistemic, and political framework.</p><p>That appeal grew as I began exploring other, more traditional cultures and found value in ways of living completely different from my own. Our biases may never be fully escapable, but I believe that by starting from the most basic axioms, we can build a sensible worldview, as Paine did. Not devoid of practical experience, but not controlled by it either.</p><blockquote><p><em>Over the centuries, our ancestors built up a general bank of practical wisdom, traditions, habits, manners, moral sentiments, and practices&#8230; The humble person understands that experience is a better teacher than pure reason.</em></p><p>Brooks, David. <em><a href="https://amzn.to/4hicvoI">The Road to Character</a></em><a class="footnote-anchor" data-component-name="FootnoteAnchorToDOM" id="footnote-anchor-2" href="#footnote-2" target="_self">2</a></p></blockquote><p>As I seek to create a moral map for myself, I&#8217;ve borrowed a metaphor from Sam Harris. In his book <em><a href="https://amzn.to/4yUMscY">The Moral Landscape</a></em><a class="footnote-anchor" data-component-name="FootnoteAnchorToDOM" id="footnote-anchor-3" href="#footnote-3" target="_self">3</a>, he pictures every possible way of living on a landscape. Its peaks are the heights of flourishing; its valleys, the depths of suffering. Some peaks are higher than others, and there may be many of them&#8212;more than one way to live well.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg" width="1456" height="971" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:971,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:77864,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://writing.jasperburns.com/i/217604494?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!5xuW!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F54bbb4a2-a20c-41a0-ab77-bb85bc70c328_1456x971.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" class="icon-noB79L"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image buttonBase-GK1x3M"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2 icon-noB79L"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>I&#8217;ll lean on that image throughout this series. But where Harris is mostly concerned with defining the metaphor and showing that peaks exist, I&#8217;m more interested in how to navigate to a mountaintop. As I see it, we are climbing in fog. We can&#8217;t see the summit. We often can&#8217;t tell whether the ridge we&#8217;re on leads somewhere higher or dead-ends at a false peak. Sometimes we can hardly feel whether our next step goes up or down.</p><p>Still, in order to climb, we first need to determine which way is up. Defining my ends became the first step in structuring a rational approach to the world. We need to know what good is, and what is good. That is why I titled Part I <em>Which Way Up?</em> In it, I try to work out what makes one place on the landscape higher than another, and argue (as Harris did) that the answer, at bottom, is the well-being of conscious creatures. As we&#8217;ll see, defining well-being itself is complex.</p><p>Yet, knowing that up is better doesn&#8217;t tell you where to step. With the heights defined, we must make sense of the terrain, even when obscured by uncertainty. We may understand that we want to climb, that we want a better world, and we may even glimpse what it looks like. But for ethics to be actionable, we need to know which step to take next, and in fog, that is hard. Part II turns to how we know the world at all, and how to act when we can&#8217;t measure what we&#8217;re trying to reach.</p><p>Knowing the terrain then comes with choices. There may be many mountains one can choose to climb, and many routes up each. Some routes run through valleys before they rise. Part III looks at those choices in one&#8217;s personal life: how we can change the way we experience the climb itself. Part IV looks at them for society: how we can shape the terrain for everyone on it.</p><p>Absent a dogma I felt I could adopt as my own, I have tried to build one from scratch. Like any good scripture, this series starts at the beginning of the universe, in the first full essay of the series, <em><a href="https://writing.jasperburns.com/p/nothing-matters-until-someone-feels">Nothing Matters Until Someone Feels It</a></em>.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://allaspect.blog/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe now&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://allaspect.blog/subscribe?"><span>Subscribe now</span></a></p><div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;nodeId&quot;:&quot;954e551d-c8b5-4bf4-8b70-85158c2c169e&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Recap: In the foreword, I borrowed the metaphor of a moral landscape, and argued that we climb it in an epistemic fog.
